Manhattan, NY 鈥� NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan today announced it has reached a significant milestone, performing its 200th gender-affirming surgery on a patient from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Twenty-nine-year-old Euro Trilll, who is non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them and he/him, underwent masculinizing top surgery earlier this year. Approximately 80 percent of the gender-affirming surgeries performed at the hospital are masculinizing top surgeries, and approximately 90 percent of the patients are new to the public health care system. Since NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan began offering gender-affirming surgeries in 2017, they have increased surgical capacity, which has led to reducing the wait聽time from consultation to surgery聽from聽8 months to 3-4聽months. This is often far less time than other hospital systems that offer the life-changing service. NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan鈥檚 Pride Health Center has been providing care to LGBTQ+ patients for over ten years. The hospital recently re-opened a comprehensive Pride Health Center, a dedicated space where LGBTQ+, transgender and gender diverse (TGD) patients can access individual care with respect and dignity. The Center serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning/queer+ (LGBTQ+) patients as they receive high-quality, culturally competent, respectful care in a dedicated space. 鈥淭his surgery has changed my life because it means that I鈥檓 able to be myself and be free,鈥� said Euro. 鈥淚 started my trans journey a little later in my life, but I鈥檓 glad I found the Pride Center at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is one of only two facilities within the public health care system that offers gender-affirming surgery on the chest, also known as 鈥榯op surgery.鈥� Feminizing top surgery can involve using either breast implants or a patient&/pressrelease/nyc-health-hospitals-metropolitan-reaches-milestone-performing-200-gender-affirming-surgeries/8217;s own tissue. Masculinizing top surgery can involve a mastectomy, or removal of breast tissue. NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan offers top surgeries to transgender and gender diverse patients who meet criteria defined by their insurance plans and their medical providers. According to Dr. Kressel, most of the gender-affirming surgery patients identify as trans male or non-binary. Specific procedures include mastectomy with nipple graft and peri-areolar breast reduction.
